| Stewart Milne Construction has secured a £4 million contract with Servite Housing Association and Highland Council to build 50 new low carbon homes in Inverness. The contractor, one of Scotland’s leading construction companies, will deliver a mix of one and two bed flats on behalf of the housing association, plus an additional range of one, two and three bed properties for Highland Council. Using closed panel timber frame construction, all properties in the development will incorporate the highest standards of insulation and air tightness, providing tenants with an energy efficient living solution. Using Stewart Milne Timber Systems’ Sigma II build system, the Servite Housing Association properties will meet the Ecohomes ‘Excellent’ standard. Throughout the design and build process, Stewart Milne Construction will be responsible for meeting the stringent Ecohomes ratings which are based on environmental performance, health and safety and quality of living. The properties, designed by Inverness-based architect practice, Colin Armstrong Associates, will also feature a central biomass boiler plant and green ‘growing’ roofs to meet the necessary energy requirements. Bill Imlach, managing director of Stewart Milne Construction said: “This is our first project in the North with Servite Housing Association and we will be working very closely with them and Highland Council to meet the very high standards that need to be achieved. Both organisations have signalled their intent for the future by bringing these low carbon homes to the affordable housing sector, and with our expertise and experience, we are confident that we can deliver the project on time and on budget.” Julie Cosgrove, Servite Housing Association Chief Executive, said: “There is an ongoing demand for affordable housing in the Highland region and it is important for us to form solid relationships with contractors such as Stewart Milne Construction in order to meet that demand effectively. The company’s portfolio of completed social housing projects speaks for itself and these new low carbon properties will be of great benefit to both the tenants and the local community”. The project, which recently commenced, is due for completion in April 2012.
